Atlas

Atlas was so named because it is supporting three worlds: the underworld, earth, and the heavens. This work weighs in at 30 pounds and is 18x18x13.

Atlas is composed of the following elements:

Metal Marble - The three spherical objects at the ends and middle of Atlas are Metal Marbles. Metal Marbles are discussed in About Metal Marbles.

Copper Plate - A 1/8 inch thick copper place separates the two halves representing the cosmos. It was stylized using various cutting and texturizing tools, and then several different types of patina chemicals were used yielding subtle color variations.

Bronze Casting - The main body is cast bronze. A wood turing was used as the original from which the mother mold was made. Two castings were made for the top and bottom of the main body from this mold.

Wood Turning - In addition to the turning for the mother mold, one end of Atlas has a turned object made from cherry which was stained to look like the patina bronze of the main body.
